Today would have been Hanae Mori’s 97th birthday. Mrs. Mori was born in Muikaichi, Shimane, Japan. She attended Tokyo Women’s Christian University, followed by dressmaking school. She designed movie costumes, flight attendant uniforms for Japan Air Lines, and the official uniforms for the Japanese Delegation to the Barcelona Olympics.
During the 70’s Mrs. Mori designed sheets for Westpoint Pepperell. These designs were sold under the Lady Pepperell label as well as Martex. Designs that have been found can be send here.
In 2002 Mrs. Mori sold her ready-to-wear and licensed apparel operation due to financial troubles and filed for bankruptcy protection. In June, 2004 she announced her retirement. Her last fashion show was in July of that year. However, she continued designing costumes.
Mori died at her home in Tokyo on 11 August 2022, at the age of 96.
